Single Application Semester Abroad Process Overview

Here’s how the Single Application process works.

Students (or groups) will submit a Single Application for semester abroad programs (e.g., no separate applications for fall and spring).

You can apply:

• Individually
• In a group of up to four people (for the fall semester only)
• In a group of up to 10 people (for the spring semester only)

Global Programs and Studies will review applications (individual or group) and work to place you/your group together in your highest-ranked program with available space and for which you/your group is qualified. If space isn’t available or the program is not a good fit for you or all students in your group, we’ll consider your next-ranked options.

Note: Study Abroad programs are designed around specific academic experiences. As part of the process, GPS will look at how well your application—whether individual or group—aligns with what the program offers.

Set yourself/your group up for success.

To give yourself the best options for studying abroad:

• Rank more than one program (you can rank up to five)
• Have at least one spring semester option
• Identify programs that match your academic or cultural goals 
• Stay open to different locations or experiences, not just the most popular ones

For programs that are more competitive or specialized, strong alignment between your interests, preparation (i.e., have you/your group taken classes in the language, do they teach courses in your major, etc.), and the program can make a difference.

Choosing what’s right for you.

There’s no one “right” way to apply—just the approach that works best for your goals.

You might consider applying individually if:

• You’re focused on a specific type of program (e.g., one that aligns well with your major, etc.)
• You do not want to compromise your top-choice program, or course selections to match a group’s collective decision 
• Your want your abroad experience to be 100% tailored to your goals 

You might consider applying as a group if:

• You know you want to go abroad with your friend group (up to four person groups in the fall semester, up to 10 person groups in the spring semester)
• You share similar majors, interests or goals
• You’re open to multiple program or term options
• You have similar academic credentials (e.g., major, GPA, etc.)
