The American-Scandinavian Foundation offers fellowships and grants to individuals to pursue research or study in one or more Scandinavian country for up to one year. Awards are made in all fields.
The United States Department of State offers scholarships for overseas intensive summer language institutes in thirteen critical need foreign languages. CLS institutes provide fully-funded group-based intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences for seven to ten weeks for U.S. citizen undergraduate and graduate students. Students may apply for one language, and will be placed at institute sites based on language evaluations after selection. Languages offered: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla/Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish, and Urdu.
The Churchill Scholarship is designed for the exceptional student in mathematics, science and/or engineering to pursue graduate study at Churchill College of Cambridge University.
DAAD Scholarship offers different scholarships throughout Germany, everything from undergraduate study to post-doctoral grants.

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is an international scholarship program to enable outstanding graduate students from outside the United Kingdom to study at the University of Cambridge.
The Luce Scholars Program is a program in which a group of eighteen highly qualified young leaders from a variety of professions will spend an experiential year working in East and Southeast Asia. Twelve Mitchell Scholars between the ages of 18 and 30 are chosen annually for one year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland.
NSEP Scholarships are available to students who study in critical world areas such as Africa, Asia (China and Japan), Eastern and Central Europe, Latin and South America and the Middle East. There must be a strong language component in the student’s program. Science, political science, history, business, and economics majors are especially encouraged to apply. Awards may be as large as $8,000 for a semester. Interested students should contact the Center for Global Programs and Studies at (336) 758-5938.
Rhodes Scholarship is a two-year grant to study for a degree at Oxford University. Thirty-two scholarships are awarded annually to exceptional students. Candidates must be between 19 and 25 years of age. Contact Jackie Sheridan at sheridj@wfu.edu.
Rotary Foundation International Ambassadorial Scholarship is a scholarship to “further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries.” Students apply to study or train in another country where Rotary Clubs are located. Applicants are ineligible for the scholarship if they are a Rotarian or a descendant of a living relative who is a Rotarian. Students have the choice of applying through the local Rotary Club by contacting the campus representative at Wake Forest of through their hometown club. General Opportunities
Transitions Abroad is a general website providing information about searching for an international job, internship, or volunteer opportunity. This site provides information and links about everything from short-term to long-term work abroad as well as English teaching organizations and au-pair.
Idealist is an online network and database of non-profit organizations. Groups, networking tools, and searches are available. You can search everything from job opportunities to organizations located in specific places so you may send “cold resumes”. Volunteer opportunities and internships are also listed.
BUNAC is a job, teaching, and volunteering placement agency offering chances to be placed in various countries throughout the world, for a fee that covers placement, visa issues, and insurance.
CDS International is a non-profit that offers many scholarship and internship opportunities. Most are located in Spain, Germany, or Argentina.
GoinGlobal is an annual subscription service that provides country-specific career and employment information, including worldwide internship and job postings, H1B employer listings, corporate profiles, and career resources for 30 countries.
Interexchange is an organization that organizes internships, work, seasonal jobs, and au-pair opportunities, for a fee that covers placement, visa issues, and insurance.
Back Door Jobs is a database of many opportunities worldwide. Adventure jobs, teaching opportunities, sustainable living, and farming opportunities, internships, and youth trip leading jobs are listed.
The Riley Guide is one of the most thorough online listings of job search resources and search engines by region and country. Almost every country or region is listed with links to their most popular job posting sites. This site also includes NGOs and is recommended if you wish to directly search for a job yourself without a placement agency.
The Experiment in International Living (EIL) is a World Learning-supported program that takes high school students on educational summer tours abroad. They offer summer positions as trip leaders in an area where you have experience and language skills. Go to their website for recruiting.
The American Red Cross has many opportunities for employment outside of the U.S. Click on their job link.
International Cooperative Education is an organization that has agreements with many companies and organizations throughout the world. They offer placements for internships and jobs. They charge a fee that covers placement, visa issues, and insurance.
Princeton-in-Asia provides transformative, service-oriented experiences for talented graduates and serves the needs of Asia as determined by their Asian partners. Over the last century, the organization has achieved this goal by providing talented young people with various opportunities to live and work in Asia. Teaching Abroad
CIEE is one of the oldest and largest experience abroad agencies. CIEE offers various opportunities to teach English around the world. Participants must pay a program fee that covers placement, visa issues, and insurance.
Japanese Exchange and Teaching Program participants are invited to Japan as one of the following positions: Assistant Language Teacher (ALT), Coordinator for International Relations (CIR), or Sports Exchange Advisor (SEA). All participants, regardless of their title, participate in order to interact with local communities to promote internationalization at the local level.
Dave’s ESL Cafe is a database of information and jobs for people interested in teaching English as a second language.
Teach Away is a jobs board that is updated daily with new teaching jobs from around the world. Students can read reviews from past teachers from many of the schools listed on the board.
Teach Abroad is an online database of English teaching opportunities.
Volunteering Abroad
The Peace Corps started in 1960 by Senator John F. Kennedy, Peace Corps is one of the most well-known opportunities to live, work and serve in a developing country.
Service Civil International is a non-profit, worldwide network of individual chapters, in many countries throughout the world that offer various work camps in numerous fields, ranging from one week to months. Long-term opportunities also exist.
Volunteers for Peace is a Vermont-based volunteer organization offering different projects for various amounts of time throughout the world. Compared to similar opportunities, VFP is very inexpensive. View their website for current projects and fees.
By becoming a member of Willing Workers on Organic Farms, you have the opportunity to receive free room and board at any of the thousands of WWOOF farms throughout the world. You do not have to have any previous farming experience.
