Health and Safety Abroad

Wake Forest University and the Center for Global Programs and Studies are committed to the safety of our students abroad. Active steps have been taken to provide students with a healthy and safe abroad experience.

WFU International Travel Clinic

The WFU International Travel Clinic is available to all currently enrolled Wake Forest students who will be traveling overseas. For more information, visit Deacon Health’s International Travel Clinic.

Study Abroad Health Insurance

All students studying on Wake Forest-administered abroad programs are enrolled in international health insurance through GeoBlue. On most affiliate programs, students will receive international health insurance coverage through their affiliate program provider. If the insurance coverage provided does not meet WFU’s standards of coverage, a GPS staff member will reach out with additional insurance options.

Crisis24 Horizon

WFU partners with Crisis24 Horizon, a leading risk management service, to provide travelers with additional safety, security, and support resources including the following:

  • Crisis24 Horizon system enrollment: Receive automated email alerts specific to your travel locations. The alerts cover notable safety, security, and health issues.
  • Crisis24 Horizon Mobile App: App includes: A Call Hotline Button (to connect with the Crisis24 hotline number dedicated uniquely to WFU); Send Safety Check-in Button (to confirm location and safety during a security event); and a Send Crisis Signal Button (to request immediate emergency assistance). It is your responsibility to download this app to your phone before you depart or once you arrive abroad and have obtained a local phone number.
  • Hotline: WFU also has a 24-7 dedicated number that can be called in case of emergency (+1-312-894-3199). This number is also provided to students prior to departure.

Approximately one month before your program, GPS will enroll you in the Crisis24 Horizon system. Once you have been enrolled, you will receive a welcome email from Crisis24 Horizon. Complete the registration steps as soon as you receive that email. The email will also include instructions for downloading the Crisis24 Horizon mobile app.

Student Guide to Sexual Assault and Harassment Abroad

While you begin learning about the host culture and features of your chosen study abroad program, it is also important to prepare for safety by addressing a variety of potentially problematic issues that may be faced while abroad, including sexual misconduct. Student Guide to Sexual Assault & Harassment Abroad discusses the issue in depth. The purpose of this information on sexual misconduct is to raise awareness of the issues, highlight some of the ways in which entering another culture may increase vulnerability, and advise students on available resources.
