Schedule an appointment
If you have questions, schedule an appointment with a study abroad advisor.
How to Apply
Global Programs and Studies staff are happy to help you with your study abroad planning and application process.
Here are the steps to apply to study abroad:
Visit the appointment request page to schedule a meeting with a study abroad advisor. During your meeting, a study abroad advisor will help you find study abroad options that meet your needs and answer your questions. In preparation for this meeting, please read the Study Abroad Getting Started Handbook, and check out the Selecting a Program page for some factors to think about when choosing a program.
Prior to your appointment, you will be asked to fill out a study abroad advising form. This form will help you reflect on what you are looking for and serves as the basis for your conversation with a study abroad advisor.
Students typically apply to 2-3 programs per term.
WFU Programs
Students applying to WFU Programs create an application in Wake Abroad. Search for the programs you wish to apply to and click the Apply button. Some programs require a meeting with a resident professor.
Affiliate Programs
If you are applying to affiliate (non-WFU) programs, visit the program website by clicking the Program Homepage link on the program’s Wake Abroad page. Students need to apply directly with the program provider in addition to creating a Wake Abroad application.
Wake Abroad applications for affiliate programs are used to provide you with information and track your respective affiliate applications.
Passports need to be valid for at least 6 months after the end of your anticipated program. A study abroad advisor can help you with the renewal process (or to apply for your first passport). We encourage you to be proactive and check your passport expiration date early because it can take several months to renew your passport. Additionally, most semester programs require students to complete a visa application so it is important to renew your passport in time for your visa process. For more information visit the Passports and Visas page.
If accepted to a program, you will be notified by email. The email will include any deadlines for submitting your deposit and confirming your space. Visit the accepted students guide for more information. If your notification comes from the program provider, be sure to let your study abroad advisor know, so we can send you the next steps.
Deadlines
Many study abroad programs offer rolling admissions which means they may accept students before the posted deadline. As a result, some programs may fill by the deadline.
- Students applying to WFU house programs and WFU language immersion programs typically apply a year in advance.
- Most other WFU programs have deadlines one semester in advance.
- Individual program deadlines can be found on each program’s page.
- Individual program deadlines can be found on the affiliate provider’s website.
- Program pages on this site are set to a default deadline that does not always correspond to the program’s deadline.
- For students interested in studying abroad during a Fall semester, deadlines run from January through March depending on the program.
- For students interested in studying abroad during the Spring semester, most deadlines are typically in September or October.
Wake Forest Summer Programs
Individual program deadlines can be found on the program pages of this website. Typically, deadlines are in mid-February but many programs will accept students as early as November.
Wake Forest Short-Term Programs
Short-Term programs typically have deadlines in November but can occasionally take applicants as late as February.
Affiliate Summer Programs
Individual program deadlines can be found on the affiliate program provider’s website. Typically, deadlines are in mid-February/early March.
Eligibility
- All Wake Forest undergraduate students are eligible to participate in any study abroad program for which they meet the prerequisite course and GPA requirements.
- Students must have a GPA of 2.0 to earn credit on affiliate programs.
- Most affiliate programs require a GPA of at least 2.5; many require a higher GPA.
- Students studying in a non-English speaking country are required to take one course in the country’s native language.
- Some Wake Forest programs require students to have completed specific language courses to be eligible for consideration.
- We encourage students seeking language immersion programs to have 4-5 semesters of prior language study.
- Students on suspension or social or academic probation during the study abroad application process, as well as anytime leading up to departure, may not be able to participate in a study abroad program and have coursework transferred to Wake Forest for credit.
- It is important that students in these situations speak to their abroad advisor as soon as possible.
Non-WFU Students
There are a few programs that may accept non-WFU programs such as INSTEP London & INSTEP Cambridge.
To apply, create an account from the application page of your selected program. Follow the instructions for “New non-Wake Forest applicants.” In addition to applying for the abroad program, you will also need to complete the visiting student application. Please contact Janice Claybrook, claybrjw@wfu.edu (semester) or Tyler Favale, favalet@wfu.edu (summer) for the details of this process.
Non-WFU students need to be accepted as visiting students before they can be considered for WFU study abroad programs. Once accepted into a program, you will be registered at Wake Forest as a non-degree student and will receive grades and credit as if the courses were taken at Wake Forest. Upon successful completion of the program, grades and credit will be posted and an official Wake Forest transcript will be sent to the address you provided on your Transcript Request Form.
Non-WFU students who plan to apply to the WFU/Cambridge: INSTEP or WFU/London: INSTEP programs do not need to complete the visiting student application and should apply directly through the program page. Please contact Steve Seaworth (steve@instep-programs.net) with questions about the INSTEP application.
You are responsible for finding out how your college or university will post Wake Forest credits. The number of credits you can earn depends on the program you choose.
Non-Wake Forest students are not eligible for financial aid or scholarships through Wake Forest. Contact your university’s financial aid office about transferring your financial aid to a Wake Forest program.
