WFU/Tunisia (Summer)

Experience the Tunisia Summer Program, an immersive academic journey set along the beautiful Mediterranean coast in historic Tunis! Students will study and explore local life and culture through coursework, homestays, and group activities. The program welcomes students at all levels: those with no prior Arabic knowledge (studying the language is not required), as well as intermediate and advanced Arabic students, who may also enroll in a language course. All participants will take a literature-in-translation course taught by a Wake Forest faculty member, focusing on Tunisian and North African works. Readings emphasize the region’s rich cultural traditions and its complex historical and political experiences, with attention to Tunisia’s place in the broader Arabic-speaking world. The literature course fulfills the Wake Forest Division II requirement, the “studies in world cultures (SWC)” 21st-Century Stewardship requirement, and the course can serve as a Foreign Language Alternative.

ARB 250: Classical Arab-Islamic Civilization through Literature (3hrs) (CD, D)
Optional: Arabic language course, level is according to previously taken courses or proficiency level.

ARB 250 examines how Arabs and Muslims in classical and medieval times (600-1400 A.D.) approached the pleasures of worldly life, organized their social domain by ethics/law, constructed their worldview through religion, reacted to nature by science, and attempted to resolve their cultural inconsistencies through theology, philosophy, and mysticism.

Jim Vizthum is a faculty member in the Middle East and South Asian Studies Program at Wake Forest University. In addition to Arabic courses, he teaches courses on linguistics and Arabic literature in translation.

Homestay

• Tour of the ruins of ancient Carthage
• Visit to the Bardo National Museum
• Trip to southern Tunisia and the Sahara Desert

The faculty director is responsible for the selection of each group based on the following criteria:

• Academic suitability
• Social and emotional maturity
• Classification
• Seriousness of the student in pursuing the academic and cultural aims of the program
• Applicability of the program to the student’s interests and studies.

The total cost of summer study abroad can be broken down into four categories:

• Program Fee – Covers homestay accommodations, group travel/excursions, some meals, and other costs associated with the program.
• Tuition – Students on WFU summer programs pay WFU summer school tuition per credit hour. The current rate is $950 per hour
• Airfare (estimated) – Varies per location. Students are responsible for their own airfare unless otherwise noted.
• Personal Expenses (estimated) – These will vary depending on the students’ spending habits, cost of living in the destination country, and the number of meals included in the program fee. This may also include visa fees, vaccinations, academic supplies/books and other miscellaneous daily expenses.

Passport Information
Students need to check their passport’s expiration date and ensure that it will be valid for at least 6 months after the program’s end date.

Students going on a summer program need to make sure their passport is valid through at least mid-February of the following year.

US passport holders who need to renew their passport should visit the U.S. Department of State’s passport website for information on this process.

Non-US passport holders who need to renew their passport should refer to their home country’s passport office.

Visa Information
If you are a US citizen, you will need to apply for the ETIAS visa.  More information on how to apply for this visa will be made available closer to the program start date.
