WFU/Lisbon: Cultivating an Entrepreneurial Mindset (Summer)

This course examines Portugal, a country that has strong socialist leanings, and the impact of those beliefs on entrepreneurial intentions, entrepreneurial culture, and innovation. Beyond the course, the program will visit startup accelerators, hubs of innovation, and meet with practicing entrepreneurs. We will also explore the cultural heritage of Lisbon, Portugal writ large, to get a holistic feel of the city.

Lisbon, Portugal, which was a hub of activity for the socialist movement of the 1970’s, thus serving as an excellent vantage point to examine the impact on entrepreneurial activity, culture, and innovation.

In 2015, Dan Cohen moved on from Cornell University to join the faculty at Wake Forest University as a professor of entrepreneurship. In 2016, Cohen co-founded Startup Lab and, in 2017, became the John C. Whitaker, Jr. Executive Director of the newly minted Center for Entrepreneurship. Recently, Dr. Cohen was instrumental in raising the largest gift from a private donor to an academic program in Wake Forest history. In terms of research, Professor Cohen earned his Ph.D. in Management with a focus on Entrepreneurship at Case Western Reserve University and studies how nascent entrepreneurs develop a passion for entrepreneurship and how, and under what conditions, they form an entrepreneurial identity. Cohen also researches how entrepreneurs develop key capabilities such as how to spot and develop valuable opportunities. Dr. Cohen was named a Master Educator by USASBE, one of only 15 such awards given out historically. A key accomplishment was inventing, along with Wake Forest colleague Greg Pool, the IDEATE Method—an empirically proven method that helps entrepreneurs spot, evaluate, and select ideas that are significantly more innovative than the previous gold standard for teaching ideation. The IDEATE Method won the Pedagogical Innovation of the Year Award at USASBE in 2023.

Typically, students will stay in either apartments or residence halls at a local university.

We will visit startup accelerators, hubs of innovation, and culturally important landmarks in Lisbon, Portugal.

The faculty director is responsible for the selection of each group based on the following criteria:

• Academic suitability
• Social and emotional maturity
• Classification
• Seriousness of the student in pursuing the academic and cultural aims of the program
• Applicability of the program to the student’s interests and studies.

The total cost of summer study abroad can be broken down into four categories:

• Program Fee – Covers homestay accommodations, group travel/excursions, some meals, and other costs associated with the program.
• Tuition – Students on WFU summer programs pay WFU summer school tuition per credit hour. The current rate is $950 per hour
• Airfare (estimated) – Varies per location. Students are responsible for their own airfare unless otherwise noted.
• Personal Expenses (estimated) – These will vary depending on the students’ spending habits, cost of living in the destination country, and the number of meals included in the program fee. This may also include visa fees, vaccinations, academic supplies/books and other miscellaneous daily expenses.

Passport Information
Students need to check their passport’s expiration date and ensure that it will be valid for at least 6 months after the program’s end date.

Students going on a summer program need to make sure their passport is valid through at least mid-February of the following year.

US passport holders who need to renew their passport should visit the U.S. Department of State’s passport website for information on this process.

Non-US passport holders who need to renew their passport should refer to their home country’s passport office.

Visa Information
If you are a US citizen, you will need to apply for the ETIAS visa.  More information on how to apply for this visa will be made available closer to the program start date.
