The CIEE DifferenceCourseworkIn Bahia, the student-centered methodology is tailored to fit your skills and needs. Whether you’re a beginner or more advanced speaker, a range of courses emphasize grammar applied through oral production, reading, writing, and listening comprehension activities. A special section of beginner-level Portuguese for Spanish speakers is also offered for students who are fluent (or near-fluent) in Spanish and have had no previous Portuguese instruction.HomestayThere are few ways better to immerse yourself in Brazilian culture than by living with a local family. In Bahia you’ll spend orientation with your fellow students before being housed with a homestay for the remainder of the program.ExcursionsThe study abroad program includes several visits to sites of historic and cultural importance, including one full-day excursion to a site of cultural interest in northeastern Brazil. Students attend Brazilian music concerts, a visit to a Candomble house, museums, dance class, percussion class, cooking class, view Brazilian films and more.Recommended CreditTotal recommended credit is 6 semester/9 quarter hours.Program RequirementsAll study abroad students take one Intensive Portuguese language and culture course at their levelAbout Salvador da BahiaSalvador da Bahia, located on the Atlantic coast in northeastern Brazil, has 3 million inhabitants. Due to the strong slave presence during the Colonial period, Salvador has a strong African influence, including religious and spiritual practices, cuisine, and ethnic dynamics. Today, Salvador is a booming city, and its historic and ethnic diversity can be noted in the city’s architecture and layout: old parts of the city are located next to modern complexes. The CIEE Study Center is located on a bustling square—2 de Julho near The Pelourinho, the historic center of the city.Where You’ll StudyUniversidade Federal da Bahia ( UFBA) is one of Brazil´s top ten universities, UFBA has several campuses but the main campus, where the Portuguese school is located, is close to student housing in the Ondina neighborhood. CIEE’s study center is located in UFBA’s Afro-Asian Study Center in the Largo 2 de Julho neighborhood in central Salvador.Housing and MealsHousing and three meals per day are included in the study abroad program fee. During orientation, students are housed together. For the remainder of the program, students are placed in Brazilian homestays.Academic ProgramEstablished in 1995, the four week Intensive Language and Culture summer study abroad program is designed to help students develop their Portuguese language fluency and learn about Brazilian culture. Students are placed in a Portuguese course suited to their level or ability, or in a special beginner-level Portuguese for fluent Spanish speakers course.Academic CultureClass size is small and includes both lectures and excursions. Classes are held on the host University campus, providing students the opportunity to be part of the Brazilian university system. This fosters a learning community that contributes to both Portuguese language proficiency and understanding of Brazilian society.Grading SystemIn the Portuguese language courses student work is assessed through reading, writing, and oral comprehension quizzes and exams, much as in the U.S. Letter grades of A through F are given with pluses and minuses.Language of InstructionPortugueseFacultyAll language courses are taught by faculty from the Department of Portuguese for foreigners at UFBA.
