Location

Vienna is the city that gave waltz to the world. Mozart, Haydn, Strauss, Schubert, Brahms, and Beethoven are just a few of the many composers who lived and worked in Vienna. In addition to its rich musical history, Vienna is a culturally diverse and vibrant city. It is home to the Vienna Boys' Choir, the famous Lipizzaner stallions, and countless coffee houses (an integral part of Viennese life). Located in the heart of Europe, students may easily travel east to the Czech Republic, Poland, and Hungary and west to France, Italy, Spain, England, and Switzerland.

In 1998, Wake Forest purchased a three-story villa in Vienna. The acquisition was made possible through the generous donation of Vic and Roddy Flow of Winston-Salem and the House was named in their honor. Built in 1898, the house was formerly the office of the U.S. Consulate.

Flow House is situated in a northwest section of Vienna, one block from the Turkenschanz Park. Located in the prestigious 19th district, the area is well-known for its embassies, diplomatic residences, and distinguished private homes.

Duration

Fall and spring semesters

Students generally attend only one semester.

Academic Program

Each fall and spring semester, a group of Wake Forest students and a Resident Professor live and study together at Flow House.

Field trips around the city, attendance at musical performances, museum visits, and cultural events are an integral part of the academic program and are highlights for many students. Longer excursions to other cities are also part of each semester's schedule of events. Past groups have visited Salzburg, Prague, Budapest, Dresden, Leipzig, and Weimar. All students take three courses taught in English plus a German language course. Classes are held at Flow House. Two courses are taught by Austrian professors. Students choose either German 153 (Intermediate German Language) or German 214 (Masterpieces of Austrian Literature) and one course from the following subjects: Art History, Music, and History. In addition, the Wake Forest Resident Professor teaches two courses from his/her discipline. Students may make special arrangements in advance to take one course with the Institute for the International Education of Students (IES) in Vienna. Classes are scheduled Monday through Thursday, leaving a three-day weekend to explore Vienna or travel to other destinations.

Fall 2009 Program Information:

Dr. Michael L. Hughes (hughes@wfu.edu) will offer 2 History courses, Who Am I? Social and Cultural Identity in East Central Europe (which will meet a Division I requirement) and Fin-de Siècle Vienna (which will meet the European history distribution for History majors). Either course could also count as an elective toward the History major or toward graduation. We will visit various sites in Vienna in connection with the two courses. We will visit Prague and Budapest for 3 days each and take a day trip to Bratislava. We will also take a day trip including visits to a Baroque monastery, a castle, and a vineyard (with wine tasting and sit-down meal). Local professors will offer courses in German and German literature and in Art in Vienna. The latter will meet the Division 3 requirement.

Spring 2010 Program Information
Dr. Michaelle Browers (browerm@wfu.edu) will teach two Political Science courses. "Political Theory: Truth & Power" will focus on how thinkers who emerged from Vienna or other central European cities have engaged some of political theory's "great thinkers" in their attempts to confront pressing issues of their day. This course counts toward Division IV Credit. "The Politics of Identity in Central Europe" will explore the cosmopolitan character of fin-de-siècle Vienna, the growth of aggressive nationalism and anti-Semitism that emerge with the challenge of Nazism and Fascism in the early part of the twentieth century, and the current challenges posed by increased Muslim immigration in the region. This course may be used toward the WGS minor. Spring 2010 students will also take weekend excursions to Budapest and Prague.

The German language prerequisite has been waived for the Spring 2010 program.  Students with no prior German language study are encouraged to apply!

Fall 2010 Program Information

Dr. Larry West (westle@wfu.edu) will hold an information session on September 16, 2009 in Greene 341 at 4.30pm on his Fall 2010 program.  Please contact Dr. West if you cannot attend the meeting and would like more information.
