Financial Aid

Wake Forest University is a strong believer in the study abroad experience for all of its students. In an increasingly interdependent world, there is no question that a deeper understanding of foreign cultures and languages will be invaluable in many aspects of students' academic, professional, and personal lives. Wake Forest is justifiably proud of the tremendous support it provides to make study abroad a feasible goal for as many students as possible. As you prepare for study abroad, you are likely to have questions about financial aid and costs.

How much will study abroad cost?
If you choose to study on a Wake Forest program, then you will pay WFU tuition. If you choose a non-WFU program, then you pay the abroad program's tuition directly (check with the non-WFU program for exact costs) and an enrollment fee to WFU. Students will be billed the enrollment fee for non-WFU programs after you are pre-registered for study abroad or after you complete the course approval process and required steps. The enrollment fee is calculated at 12% of semester WFU tuition.

How do I estimate the total cost for study abroad?
For WFU programs you can estimate your costs by looking at the tuition and fees for a given term at WFU and adding additional expenses for airfare, personal expenses, etc. WFU program directors can provide detailed estimates for their programs. For non-WFU programs, you should research the program's website and printed literature. All programs publish tuition and fees, room, board, etc. In addition, most outside providers can provide budget sheets that outline all estimated cost and personal expenses.

Can I use my Wake Forest financial aid for study abroad?
Students participating on one of Wake Forest's study abroad programs are awarded aid in the same way as for a semester on the Reynolda Campus.

Students enrolled on approved non-WFU programs will be considered enrolled at Wake Forest for the purpose of applying for aid under both Wake Forest and the federal Title IV Higher Education Act aid programs.

Can I apply for outside scholarships and financial assistance?
Yes. Wake Forest has many resources available to find scholarships and financial assistance for study abroad. Refer to the Scholarships section of this site for more information. We also encourage you to research other opportunities.

How will I be billed for my semester or year abroad?
Students who enroll in a Wake Forest study abroad program continue to pay tuition directly to Wake Forest University and are billed accordingly. Students who choose to enroll in an approved non-WFU study abroad program pay Wake Forest University an enrollment fee (12% of current WFU semester tuition.). Tuition and fees are billed separately by the study abroad institution. Students can request that their Wake Forest financial aid funds be sent to their study abroad program by filling out the
Study Abroad Refund Form.
