Safety Abroad

Wake Forest University and the Center for International Studies are committed to the safety of our students abroad. Active steps have been taken to provide students with a healthy and safe abroad experience.

At Wake Forest's houses in London, Venice, and Vienna, the University has studied issues of safety with the help of local experts. Assessments of risk have been made, and procedures are in place to help in case of an emergency. Specifically, a detailed crisis management plan has been developed. This plan applies to WFU houses abroad and to other WFU-run programs with faculty directors, such as in Dijon or Salamanca. Meetings and discussions have occurred so that University personnel -- both here and abroad -- understand their responsibilties. A major asset for us at these overseas programs is the presence of faculty directors who know their roles in the crisis management plan. Furthermore, our crisis management plan has been filed with U.S. Consular offices to facilitate emergency response measures should it become necessary.

Of course, many Wake Forest students choose to study with other approved programs or universities. Those institutions are directly responsible for responding to conditions that may arise where their programs are located. Each one of these outside institutions has its own procedures in place for emergency situations. The WFU Center for International Studies remains in close contact with all outside study abroad programs and monitors worldwide events so that students can be alerted to to any potential threats to their health or safety.

Study Abroad Insurance

The WFU Center for International Studies requires that all students verify with their current health insurance provider if their plan will provide overseas coverage. If students are not covered under an existing plan or will not be covered by a study abroad program's plan, then students should look into purchasing additional insurance specifically for the duration of the study abroad experience.
