Wake Forest University understands that parents want to stay informed about program details and all the preparations that are necessary for a great study abroad experience. We invite parents to learn more about Wake Forest's programs and policies by reading through the information below. If you have additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact the WFU Center for International Studies.
Where can I find information about the study abroad program my son or daughter is interested in? Each program has an online brochure that provides information on eligibility requirements (such as minimum GPA), costs, courses, housing, etc. To locate a program, click on "Find a program" on our homepage. You can search for a program either by typing in the name of the program or according to city, country, region, academic area, language, etc.
How much is it going to cost for my son or daughter to study abroad? Program costs vary, depending on location and type of program. If a student chooses to study on a Wake Forest program, then you will pay WFU tuition. If a student chooses a non-WFU program, then you pay the abroad institution's tuition directly. Exact costs for non-WFU programs can be found on linked pages within the programs brochure pages. These links will also provide estimated out-of-pocket expenses, such as airfare, personal expenses, food, and, in some cases, housing. WFU will also bill all students on non-WFU programs an enrollment fee equal to 12% of WFU semester tuition. For information on financial aid and scholarships please visit the appropriate pages on the homepage.
How should I ensure that my son or daughter has access to money overseas? First, check with your local bank on what they recommend. Generally speaking, your son or daughter will not need to open up a bank account overseas, as most international banks accept US ATM cards. ATM cards and credit cards usually have the best exchange rate, so students can save by using them. It is recommended to use cards sparingly in countries with widely fluctuating exchange rates. The cost for charged purchases reflects the rate at the time the account is billed, not when the item is purchased. While credit cards are widely accepted in most countries abroad, students may be tempted to overspend if they rely solely on credit cards. Furthermore, certain establishments will not accept credit cards, so it is important to always have some cash on hand. It is important to note, however, that credit cards are a convenient way to shop abroad. Students do not have to worry about handling large amounts of cash and usually receive very favorable exchange rates. Students may also use an ATM card in many overseas locations to obtain money in the local currency from a bank at home. Similarly, students can obtain cash from credit cards at either ATMs or local banks. It is a good idea to check with your card company to see if the card's Personal Identification Number (PIN) will work in the destination country. Also check to see if a new PIN for the credit card is needed since some countries use a different number of digits in their PINs.
Is it safe for my son or daughter to study abroad? All students must take part in a mandatory pre-departure orientation provided by the Center for International Studies. During this orientation, the Center for International Studies and WFU Police Department brief students regarding safety and health risks, as well as offer suggestions on how to avoid these risks. To learn more about health and safety issues for students on study abroad programs, click on the "Health and Safety" link on the homepage.
Will my son or daughter need health insurance while abroad? Yes. If your current health insurance policy does not provide overseas coverage, then you must purchase health insurance specifically for that purpose. Many companies now specializing in short term health insurance for study abroad participants can be found on the web.
