There are many scholarships available for study abroad. Below is a list of the most popular sources of funding.
Global Citizens Scholarship The Center for International Studies is pleased to offer the new Global Citizens Scholarship for students who study abroad on approved credit-bearing programs. Funding for the Global Citizens Scholarship is made available by the Provost's Office as part of the University's Quality Enhancement Plan.Scholarship awards will range from $1,000 to $5,000 for Wake Forest-administered programs and for affiliate programs (offered through approved program providers or other universities). The current application cycle is open to students planning to study abroad for the Spring 2010 semester. WFU Study Abroad Scholarship Scholarship awards vary based on the term of study (summer or semester). Awards range from $1,000 to $2,000. To be eligible students must (1)study abroad on a WFU program; (2)receive academic credit while abroad; (3)be fully enrolled; and (4)be an undergraduate while studying abroad. Students may only receive this scholarship once. Students may apply for the scholarship before being accepted to a study abroad program. The deadline to apply for Spring scholarships is around October 15. The deadline to apply for Fall and Summer scholarships is around March 15. Please check with the CIS for exact deadlines each semester. Late applications will not be accepted. ACC-IAC Scholarship Application Five scholarships, valued at $1,000 each, are given to undergraduates studying abroad in non-traditional destinations for a semester. Eligible regions include: Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. Selection is based on scholastic standing, financial need, essay response, and recommendations. WFU/China Program Scholarship Funds of up to $1,500 are available from SASASAAS on a need basis for students on this program. Application must be made at the same time you apply for the program in China. SeeCenter for International Studies for applications.
Casa Artom Fund for Italian Studies Scholarships are made available to one or two students each semester who will be participating in the WFU program in Venice. Well-qualified students who can demonstrate need are eligible to apply. Students should contact Peter Kairoff, Department of Music, (336) 758-5369, or kairoff@wfu.edu. David Hadley/Worrell House Scholarship Fund Provides a scholarship to an undergraduate student who otherwise qualifies for the Worrell House program, but who would incur excessive financial sacrifices without the scholarship. Recommendations are then sent to the Financial Aid Office for consideration.
Hubert Humphrey Studies Abroad Scholarship Awarded on the basis of need and merit to undergraduate students participating in the WakeForest programs in London, Venice, and Vienna. These program directors will then send their recommendations to the Financial Aid Office for consideration.
Ivy Hixson Fund Awards given to provide assistance to students studying in the WFU progam in London. Interested students should contact Dr. Kathy Smith, Political Science, (336) 758-5456 or by e-mail at smithkb@wfu.edu.
Pro Humanitate Scholars Program (Independent Study Projects) These scholarships provide support for five students and faculty each year who collaborate on a community-related research project (most likely during the summer months). Applications are available in the Center for International Studies.
Richter Scholarship Scholarships of up to $5,000 are available for competitive independent study or research projects, requiring travel away from Winston-Salem, for undergraduate and graduate students. International projects are especially encouraged. Each student will be required to have a faculty mentor for the project. Copies of the final reports/artistic presentation will be forwarded to the Trustees for the Richter Funds. Scales International Studies Scholarship Available to all students including seniors who wish to do post-graduate study. Selection will be based on academic ability, financial need and the originality of the program. Application forms are available in the Center for International Studies.
Lowelland Anne Tillett Eastern European Scholarship Funds given for study in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Applications for spring study abroad are available in October and in March for summer and fall study abroad. Contact the Center for International Studies for details.
Scholarships available through outside sources
Robert B. Bailey Scholarship for Minority Students This fund supports minority students who wish to participate in any CIEE educational program including study, work, voluntary service, and internship programs. These awards are need-based.
Boston University Study Abroad Study abroad grants are awarded for BostonUniversity program participants who demonstrate financial need, with minimum grants of $500 for a semester or $400 for summer. Merit scholarships of $300 are available to students with a GPA of 3.5 and above. Program-specific grants are awarded to students in the Dresden, Moscow, Niger and Padova programs.
Bowman Travel Grant Awarded to students participating in programs in non-traditional destinations like Central and South America, the Caribbean, Asia and Africa. Must be a CIEE program. Applicants must demonstrate both academic preparation for their intended program and financial need.
Butler University, Institute for Study Abroad General scholarships ranging from $500 to $3500 are available. Designated scholarships are available for the University of East Anglia and the University of Leeds. Travel grants are also available to cover airfare costs on Butler IFSA group flights. Council on International Education Exchange (CIEE) Scholarships In an effort to make study abroad opportunities available to the widest possible audience, Council's International Study Programs Division offers scholarships each year to students who demonstrate both academic excellence and financial need. Applications deadlines are in March for summer, fall and academic year programs and in October for spring programs. For further information contact scholarships@ciee.org.
English-Speaking Union Scholarship The English-Speaking Union sponsors numerous programs to encourage the use of the English language for both native and non-native English-speakers. For applications and information (212) 818-1200.
Federal Scholarships for Study in China The U.S. Department of Education has awarded Council (CIEE) funding under the Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad Program to provide financial assistance to student participating in the Chineses language programs offered by the CouncilStudyCenter at PekingUniversity and NanjingUniversity.

Gilman Scholarship Programs Founded under the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000, this congressionally-funded program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education. The program aims to encourage students to choose nontraditional study abroad destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe and Australia and aims to support students who have been traditionally underrepresented in study abroad. This includes but is not limited to, students with high financial need, community college students, students in underrepresented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, students with disabilities, and students of nontraditional age. The Gilman Scholarship provides awards of up to $5,000 for U.S. citizen undergraduate students at two- and four-year institutions to pursue country-based undergraduate opportunities abroad of up to one academic year. To be eligible students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application and cannot be studying abroad in a country currently under a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning or in Cuba. IES (Institute for International Education of Students) Merit awards up to $3000/semester available for study on IES programs. 3.5 GPA required. Application deadline on or before May 1. Need-based scholarships ranging from $500-1500 also available.
IES Berlin Minority Scholarship Awards up to $9700/semester available for study on the IES program in Berlin. 3.5 GPA and 2 years college-level German required, as well as demonstrated financial need. Preference given to students with majors in German, International Relations, or European History with emphasis on Germany. Deadlines are Dec. 1 for Spring and May 1 for fall and full-year.
IIE Grants-in-Aid Competition $500 grants are available to students wishing to study overseas. Applications are due in April. Contact IIE at (713) 621-6300 extension 31 or 16 for applications or further information.
ISA (International Studies Abroad) Scholarships available for summer ($1000), semester ($1000), and academic year ($2500) for participation in one of the ISA programs in Spanish speaking countries. Minimum GPA of 2.75, one completed year of college level Spanish required.
Luce Scholars Program A program in which a group of eighteen highly qualified young leaders from a variety of professions will spend an experiential year working in East and Southeast Asia. An applicant must have the BA degree and be no older than 29. WakeForest may nominate two persons from its seniors and alumni. MacAnderson Scholarship Awards of $2,000 made to students participating in programs at a EuropeanUniversity with a foreign language component. Applications for this scholarship may be obtained from the Financial Aid Office (4 Reynolda Hall).
NSEP Scholarship These scholarships are available to students who study in critical world areas such as Africa, Asia (China and Japan), Eastern and Central Europe, Latin and South America and the Middle East. There must be a strong language component in the student's program. Science, political science, history, business and economics majors are especially encouraged to apply. Awards may be as large as $8000 for a semester. Interested students should contact the Center for International Studies at (336) 758-5938.

Rhodes Scholarship A two-year grant to study for a degree at OxfordUniversity. Thirty-two scholarships are awarded annually to exceptional students. Candidates must be between 19 and 25 years of age. Contact Tom Phillips, Financial Aid Office, (336) 758-5180 or e-mail at phillitp@wfu.edu.
Rotary Foundation International Ambassadorial Scholarship A scholarship to "further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries." Students apply to study or train in another country where Rotary Clubs are located. Applicants are ineligible for the scholarship if they are a Rotarian or a descendant of a living relative who is a Rotarian. Students have the choice of applying through the local Rotary Club by contacting the campus representative at WakeForest of through their hometown club. W.D. Sanders Scholarship Scholarships of up to $2,000 are awarded to qualified students (rising sophomores, juniors and seniors) for intensive language study in Germany or Austria. Students must have completed German 153 by the time they go abroad. Awards are given for the following, in order of priority: 1) summer language study, 2) supplemental aid for a semester or year abroad with IES, or 3) supplemental aid for junior year abroad with any other program. Applications are available in October from the German department office.
The Simpson Scholarships in Egyptology Available to outstanding students interested in studying Egyptology at the American University in Cairo. Scholarships of $2,500 awarded for a semester, $5,000 for full-year. Harry S. Truman Scholarship Awarded on the basis of merit to students who are college juniors. Applicants should have extensive records of public and community service and a background of strong academic performance. The ideal candidates are committed to careers in government elsewhere in the public sector, have outstanding leadership potential, and wish to influence public policies. Applicants should possess intellectual strength and analytical abilities, and plan to attend graduate school to prepare for their careers. WFU may nominate three students.
